Ronda Roberts High Heel Samurai:
Young Love and Broken Necks 1
August 1, 2008
Tori (Lauren Guglielmello) and her friends (Erin Murphy, Autumn Silva, and Ashley Smith) have a meeting to discuss a group project for history class. They decide they are going to do a video for the project. The topic has to do with historical figures that have a modern impact. While whining about the project and trying to figure out who they will profile in their video, Sophie (Sam Pannier) enters the room and informs Tori that she needs to ready herself for reservations in a half hour. The girls ask Sophie for her advice, and Sophie seems to believe the project is an opportunity to have fun – or does she? After giving some ideas for figures to profile, Sophie leaves.

Once the girls are alone again, Tori’s friend berates her for not hooking her up with John (Paul Drechsler-Martell). Tori apologizes. The girls ask her whether there are any sparks between Tori and John. When Tori says “no,” I don’t like him like that, the girls tell Tori she must like someone because everyone likes someone. Tori thinks for a moment. She then tells the girls that she likes Antonio. The girls, naturally, are lost because Tori only knows him through the tournaments.

I think it is cute that Tori is a late bloomer in the dating department. She has grown up with a protective older sister. She has also been very active in martial arts – making it so that she has not had a lot of free time for dating. While her friends seem to have more experience with boys, Tori is not. This twist juxtaposes nicely against the fact that Tori is one of the judges for an illegal street fighting competition.
